The Three Audio Components

16/01/2021

Audio consists of three main components... Voice, Sound FX and Music. These attributes contain major effects in audio in a general.

Voice, Sound FX And Music

Voice includes ADR, production recording and dialogue editing while sound FX includes SFX, foley and ambience where as music is just music. These all contribute to the three main components in major ways...

Voice;

ADR: (Automated Dialogue Replacement) This is where they would re-record the dialogue to improve the audio quality or make changes to the original script.

Production Recording:  This is the sound mixer where they would record sounds on set during every take what would be used by the production team as a reference for the film, this is also known as wild sound.

Dialogue Editing: They have the role of editing the audio track by assembling and synchronizing all the sounds what may be dialogue or backing tracks.

Sound FX;

SFX: This is what they call the sound effects for example any explosions or if you could hear the rumbling of a machine.

Foley: Foley is the recreation of everyday sounds or wild sounds. This could range from a doorbell or a car beeping in the background to the sound of footsteps or steam coming out of a boiling kettle.

Ambience: A word to describe the consistent sounds in the background that causes the knock off effect of atmosphere for the demographic.

Music;

Music is as it states is just music but it does serve several functions such as creating a emotional response, rhythm to scenes and comments on actions. Sometimes the music is what becomes the most iconic part of the movie for example the star wars intro and the avengers theme song.
