Investigating Audio Production

Did you know that the first sense a unborn baby gets is the sense of sound? A baby that is still in your womb actually starts to be able to hear the sound of music, Your heart beat and so on around 18 weeks into the pregnancy.

Sound in the media industry is often gone unnoticed and is not that appreciated considering what an impact it has on a movie or series. Still today even though its gaining more attention and growing into a bigger subject it still isn't noticed by people who are outside of the media industry.

Audio consists of three main components... Voice, Sound FX and Music. These attributes contain major effects in audio in a general.

Diegetic and non-diegetic are two more components what need to be considered when talking about sound... Despite being able to have both in a scene they are very different. Down below I will go into what diegetic and non-diegetic sound is more.

Sound Scape Audio

In this task we where told to create a sound of a women walking down a street through the city and into a restaurant, we could arrange it however we wanted to as long as we got the final outcome how it was tasked to be. I was able to do this by using Adobe Audition this allowed me to develop my skills and further my panning and also volume levels to create the illusion of you being the lady walking down this busy city street into a restaurant. In the end I did really like my final results I feel quite proud for my first ever time using Adobe Audition... I was able to successfully pan and also edit the sounds of the clips to make it have more of a reverb or dry effect. If I could do it again I would have made it a bit shorter I feel that it goes on for a bit longer than it should.

Dead Space Audio

During the Dead Space task we where given a scene from this alien spaceship invasion and we had to match and apply the video with the sound clippings that we got making sure it fits the timing and theme of the video. I once again used Adobe Audition for this since it allowed me to watch the video and apply the sounds where needed this was very useful for the footsteps what I did struggle with a little bit. I didn't do as much panning for this but I did apply some effects to my sound to gain a more realistic feel to the sounds. If I could do it again I think I would work on the timing of the sounds.... I feel that the footsteps where off at times and that some sound clips where to fast or to slow but for a first try I'm happy but I would like to practice more in my free time to develop my skills.

Phone Conversation Audio

In today's session we where told to complete the task of re creating a phone conversation on Adobe Audition; Adobe Audition allowed me to use different effects such as reverb and filters to make this audio track more realistic. I ended up really liking how this turned out I found Adobe Audition useful for creating these sounds, they where easy to use what helped since I was new to creating soundtracks. If I could change anything it would be the sound of the voices that where used due to them sounding very robotic what I didn't like.

Audio Analyses

Scene 1; Wall-E Scene

In this scene we see Wall-E and Eva Fly about space where Wall-E presents the plant that they needed to save the ship, Eva was super happy about this and hugs Wall-E where they soon go on a romantic flight around the ship dancing to the music that is playing over the scene.

Wall-E doesn't have much dialogue due to the main protagonists being robots except for when the humans talk between each other. Wall-E and Eva do use sounds to communicate but the only sounds we can really recognize is when they call each others name. In this scene we see Eva and Wall-E communicate through actions but they do call each other by their names. Further on, later in the scene we see the captain here he is communicating with the ship to learn more about earth... we also see a bit earlier two characters that pop up in the movie a couple times talk to each other for the first time  thanks to seeing Wall-E and Eva. In this scene we see a good example of ambiance with props such as the fire extinguisher what is the main used item... Here it sets the atmosphere for what is happening it allows the demographic to feel more immersed in what is happening. One more really important factor is that whenever Wall-E moves you can hear the sounds of his joints rolling to allow him to move helping portray him even more as a robot.

Non- diegetic sounds include sounds like music, redubbing, ADR and foley... these are commonly included to create certain sound effects what we will cover more down below for this scene. The Wall-E clip that is provided above can be seen as a non- diegetic This is because the dialogue that is being spoken has been recorded separately and placed over where they have spoken also for majority of the scene a music plays over the clip while Wall-E and Eva dance around the spaceship. The music that is playing isn't a normal song that you find on the top charts but a song composed of different instruments and beats placed to create a certain atmosphere. More on the soundtrack the aesthetic it creates is a romantic sweet experience for the audience it shows how pure and sweet Wall-E and Eva's love for each other is, While dancing around the spaceship you see them chasing each other but not in a hurried way but more of a elegant glide that keeps in pace with the music furthering this effect.

During the clip you can see where the post production also comes into play like the silence in space this helps create a bigger impact during the scene... Post production during a scene is very hard to notice is there unless you have a good ear or you really listen, it's where anything in the sound has either been taken away from the clip or been modulated such as dialogue or ambiance it's used to portray different methods for the film. Another good example of this is when the main protagonists are talking in space their voices are more reverbed because of the setting they are in. There is also a good use of sound effects when Wall-E is using the fire extinguisher to race around in space you can clearly hear the fire extinguisher and how it pans from one ear to the other to create the illusion of it getting closer to the screen, this is also ambiance what I had talked about earlier. When the robot that controls the ships appear you can also hear the use f sound effects when he presses buttons or moves about.

Scene 2;Easy A Scene

Easy A is about a teenage girl called Olive who goes though high school being unknown until a rumor spreads and she embraces her new life... In this clip Olive has received a card what plays the popular song "Pocketful of sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield, here you see her replaying the same song over and over again in different settings.

The dialogue for this video is raw footage of her singing it wasn't recorded and then layered over the top but instead the audio was used from the camera's original footage. They have made it so that her voice is more intensified for the demographic to hear her voice more clearly while the music plays along side it, this creates a different emotional viewpoint we, the audience, have seen of her so far. In Easy A Olive is fairly quiet and timid in the start of the movie so to see this bubbly side of her being loud makes the demographic have different thoughts and opinion's of her. Ambiance is sounds that may also in the background such as the shower we can hear rain pouring down while she sings the song. Also when Olive opens the card and the music starts to play out of it it helps pull the scene together especially since that the music is crucial to the clip to show that it is coming from the card.

This helps add a effect to the scene where as they have made that scenes audio more reverbed due to the setting of the room shes in helping create the scene more believable that she's in a real bathroom. You can see a lot of SFX in this clip from how the music is effected by the environments the card is placed in also how the tone of her singing and whether it is more amplified in certain rooms change as the clips in the scene change along with the song. As for whether this scene would be classified as diegetic or non-diegetic I believe that it shows characteristics of both terms. Diegetic audio is sounds that the people filming can also hear in the process of making the scene as well as the audience who watches it later such as dialogue, background noises and characters. While as non diegetic audio is sounds that don't come from the world shown on screen but ones that have been adding in through editing such as music. We can see this as we can hear Olive singing but also at times the music that is added in may look like its coming from the card but at times in the clip sounds like has been put in and not taking from the card.

The song "Pocketful of sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield is played throughout this scene shows the demographic an aesthetic of cheerfully catchy feelings what would brighten even the saddest persons day. It is known for being a upbeat song that cant help but make you want to sing along just like Olive is doing in this clip.
